The Norwegian Institute of Journalism invites you to a media seminar about The War in Gaza
Admission is free.
9:30 Opening remarks
9:45 The eyewitness reports: Can we trust them?
The Norwegian doctors Erik Fosse and Mads Gilbert share their experience. The voices on the inside: The Palestinian journalists Taghreed El-Khodary and Ibrahim Barzak tell us about how it is to work for international media in Gaza. Torbjørn Morvik from Norwegian Broadcasting Corp. (NRK) went to experience the Israelis constant fear of a missile attack.
11:00 The journalists on the outside: Biased, subjective, truthful?
What are the consequences when the media are not getting access? Is the role of the media in this conflict a long step from the embedding of journalists we saw in Afghanistan and Iraq? Is this the last we will see of the traditional and professional war correspondent? What about bloggers and the man on the street – is that who we will relate to and depend on in future conflicts? How did the Arab and Israeli media cover this latest war? Correspondents Fredrik Græsvik (TV2) og Sidsel Wold (NRK) are coming. Lisa Goldman, a blogger and journalist from Israel, will share her insight alongside Mohamed El Dahshan from Egypt. News editor Peter Raaum (Dagbladet) will also be there.
12:00 Lunch (on your own)
13:00 The media coverage of the war in Gaza: Did we get enough insight?
The development organizations give us their insight of the media coverage. The Red Cross almost functioned as a news agency in Gaza. Communications director Bernt Apeland will be there. Secretary General Petter Eide from Norwegian People’s Aid is also coming. Former Middle East correspondent and author Odd Karsten Tveit shares his views.
14:15 Did we do enough to secure media access to Gaza?
Did they do enough? The politicians will answer. What was done to try to secure the media access to Gaza? Were there deliberate attacks on and use of the media by Israel and Hamas? Kjetil Haanes of the Norwegian Journalism Union is back from Gaza as part of a fact-finding mission. What did the International Federation of Journalists find? The Norwegian Editors’ Association will be represented by Arne Jensen. A representative of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry will also be participating.
